Why Membership Matters

We believe that the church is called by Christ to do its best to be a fellowship of truly born again people. Though it is impossible to see the heart, Christ has commissioned the local church to exercise discernment on the basis of beliefs and behaviors. A person should take healthy membership status seriously in his or her life because the affirmation of a biblical church is an important aspect of being personally identified as an authentic believer.

Throughout the Old Testament there is a clear distinction between the people of God and the people of the world. In the New Testament, the pattern is continued under the banner of Christ and baptism in his name. Local churches were expected to function with an awareness of who was identified with the community of faith and who was not. Such identification was the basis for brotherhood, discipleship, and accountability.

By joining a local fellowship of believers, a person demonstrates the desire to grow along side other believers and to receive pastoral care. Through membership with God’s people, a person is identified as a serious follower of Christ and formally recognized by other believers as a brother or sister in Christ.

How to Join

Because of these biblical convictions, we take membership seriously and have the following process for receiving new members:

1. Profess faith in Christ and demonstrate a sincere desire to follow him in repentance and obedience.

2. Be biblically baptized as a believer by immersion.

3. Meet with a member of the pastoral staff so that our pastors can help you with the decision.

4. Agree to attend a membership class that further explains who we are as a church fellowship.

5. Receive a vote of affirmation from the church family one week after being recommended for membership by the pastors.

Our Church Covenant

Every member of UBC agrees to fellowship within the spirit of our church covenant. We believe it is a beautiful statement of what the heart of a church member should be.

It reads as follows:

Having been led by the Spirit of God to receive Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, and, on the profession of our faith, having been baptized according to the Scriptures, we the members of University Baptist Church, enter into covenant with one another as one body in Christ.

We resolve, therefore, in this fellowship, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to serve together in Christian love. We will strive for the spiritual growth of our church, actively participate in its worship and ordinances, uphold its discipline and doctrines, and contribute cheerfully and regularly to support its total ministry.

Seeking to bring every phase of our lives under the Lordship of Christ, we commit our lives and destinies to Him. Accordingly, we covenant to have family and personal devotion, guide our children toward a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and seek constantly the salvation of our family and acquaintances.

Recognizing that our words and actions are a living witness of Jesus Christ, we will be just in our dealings and exemplary in our conduct and speech. Although we are free in Christ, we will refrain from any practice that either harms our bodies, the temples of God’s Holy Spirit, or impairs our influence with others.

We further covenant to pray for each other, watch over one another in Christ-like love, and aid each other in times of need. We will cultivate Christian compassion and courtesy in our daily lives, being slow to take offense and always ready for reconciliation.

We promise that when we move from this place we will, as soon as possible, unite with a local church where we can continue to carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word.
